e-Learning Industry Standards - SCORM

We reinforced our pledge to support industry standards for interoperability by achieving Adopter status of the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM). Generated by the U.S. Department of Defense's Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) organization, SCORM specifications are reflected in the Portico's CareerMap™ Learning Management System (LMS) and serve to minimize challenges associated with e-learning content delivery.

About ADL

SCORM aims to foster creation of reusable learning content as "instructional objects" within a common technical framework for computer and web-based learning. SCORM describes that technical framework by providing a harmonized set of guidelines, specifications, and standards. Borrowing from work of other specification and standards bodies, ADL developed a model for creating and deploying e-Learning.

The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative is a collaborative effort between government, industry, and academia to establish a new distributed learning environment that permits the interoperability of learning tools and course content on a global scale. ADL's vision is to provide access to the highest quality education and training, tailored to individual needs, delivered cost-effectively anywhere and anytime.

Section 508

Portico is committed to providing all users within their unique abilities access to and use of its online learning solution. To that end, we have made significant progress in making our CareerMap™ Learning Management System and our best-of-class content available to users with disabilities, in accordance with regulations adopted under Section 508. Because Section 508 has no official certification entity or process, each federal agency sets its own criteria for Section 508 compliance. Individual agencies determine whether a given information technology product meets their specified criteria. Consequently, compliance with Section 508 is more of a process than a result.

About Section 508

Section 508 requires that Federal agencies' electronic and information technology is accessible to people with disabilities. The Center for Information Technology Accommodation (CITA), in the U.S. General Services Administration's Office of Governmentwide Policy, has been charged with the task of educating Federal employees and building the infrastructure necessary to support Section 508 implementation. Using this web site, Federal employees and the public can access resources for understanding and implementing the requirements of Section 508. Section 508 will open many more doors to information for people with disabilities. While all stakeholders, Federal agencies, industry representatives, and, most certainly, people with disabilities are interested in a rapid implementation of Section 508, it is recognized that the product development lifecycle and other product development issues which may make implementation occur on a slower timeline than hoped.
